How to type in Lithuanian!

7 02 2007

Typing Lithuanian!

I got a few comments on how I was avoiding the Lithuanian letters:

ą č ę ė į š ų ū ž

Well the reason I did avoid them was that it was extraordinarily annoying to cut and paste those individual letters into Lithuanian words! So I consulted the magical forum of Debesėlis and I was able to get the help of a puikus bicas called ascii who gave me this advice…

Aciu, Aciu!

31 01 2007

Sveiki!

Following the posting of this article on Delfi Blog, I’ve gotten a few thousand visitors to my smulkus blogas! In fact I’ve gotten so many that my current mokytoja is envious that I will be hounded by hordes of nuostabus moktoju, but alas I remain faithful.

So to the many labai puiku[s?] people who commented on and visited my blog

Labai Aciu Puiku (1.tauta; 2.liaudis [I have no idea which one to use!])

I’ll keep on my kelionė! I’m still deciphering the complexities of people’s comments, but keep them coming!

Peace.
1. taika; 2. (ramumas) tyla, ramybė

Language of Music

30 01 2007

If music is indeed the spice of life, then the ability to speak the language of music is a critical part of any language, no less Lithuanian. I recently learned some of this ‘language of music’ in Lithuanian over a lively discussion about some of this era’s greatest and classic musicians such as The Backstreet Boys, Emma Bunton, S Club 7, Spice Girls, Wham, and many more!

Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

Klausausi muzikos
I am Listening to music  (p.s. Thanks to Rusne for catching this!)
Kokios grupes tau patinka?
What bands do you like?
Ko tu megsti klausytis?
What do you like listening to?

About boy/girl bands

As dievinu Backstreet Boys/Emma Bunton
I love Backstreet Boys/Emma Bunton!
NSync yra pati geriausia grupe pasaulyje
Nsync is the best group in the world!
Nick iš BSB turi nuostabius plaukus
Nick from Backstreet boys has beautiful hair!
Kuris grupes narys yra karsciausias?
Which band member is the hottest?

Any ‘pearls of wisdom’ on how exactly to discuss music in more detail would be appreciated! Plus I’m sure there are some mistakes there so catch them if you can!

Iki!

Complimenting a lady

24 01 2007

According to an anonymous source, Lithuanian girls are like all girls and they love attention and these lines are very good apparently! My source is extremely hot by the way and has heard more than her share of compliments, so these are definitely worthwhile to try out!

(Note the grammatical syntax: tu=you esi=are labai=very) This is written from the perspective of a guy complimenting a girl i.e. the words have feminine genders!

Tu esi labai graži You are very beautiful/good looking etc.
Tu esi labai nuostabi You are very amazing/wonderful etc.
Tu esi labai protinga You are very smart/intelligent/clever etc.
Tu esi labai miela You are very cute/nice/sweet etc.
Tu esi labai puiki You are very nice/sweet etc.

Alright these here are pretty complex, I just know the translation, I won’t bother with the grammar yet! I have no idea about the syntax with these ones but you can try these out anyways and they’re probably missing accented characters too!

Tu tokia saldi. Kaip cukrus You are sweet. Like sugar.
Man patinka tavo humoro jausmas I like your sense of humour.
Tu man vienintele You are the one for me. (p.s. be careful!)
Tavo nuostabios akys You have beautiful eyes. (Use akis to say you have a beautiful eye)

And finally a good pickup line is always handy and I made sure to get a good corny one translated!

Ar turi zemelapi? Nes as baigiu pasiklysti tavo akyse Do you have a map? Because I’m lost in your eyes.
– EDIT
Aš tave/jus įsimylėjau iš pirmo žvilgsnio.I felt in love with you at first sight. (credits to Snobas!)

Enjoy!
